Rock Breaking & Stone Pitching
If you have ever lived in the hills of Perth you might be all to familiar with the sound of a rock breaker tapping away. People often shy away from rock breaking or doing a job properly because of the cost associated with it, but with the right size machine its often more affordable than you might think. After hiring in rock breakers over the last 15+ years we have just chosen and purchased a 14 ton excavator and DNB breaker d60 as our weapon of choice, together with an auto lubing system (this means the only down time is home time), ensuring your rock breaking is done efficiently, cost effectively and honestly.
By keeping our rock breaking in house we can keep cost to the client down, ie no need to float in another machine and pay another operator. The amount of rock can often be unknowable and as a result we often recommend rock breaking at an hourly rate as an extra, (and we are quite happy for our clients to sit and time us with a stopwatch). Although it is an extra, with 15 years experience we are confident we can give an estimate within $1000.00. and usually can work out a capped price that suits the client and ourselves. People often want an inclusive price on earthworks including rock breaking, this is fine and we are happy to do this, but we must quote on a "worst case scenario", and as a result we always find it to be more beneficial for the client to work an hourly rate.
What do I do with all the rock?
After rock breaking there is often big piles of rock left behind. In most cases some is used to stabilize embankments around the sand pad, this is called stone pitching, but when there is extra we offer a service to remove the rock to be crushed at very competitive price. It is far cheaper to do this whilst the heavy machinery is on site. Another alternative is to advertise on a website for people to come and collect, if that is the case we are more than happy to break the rock up to a smaller more manageable size.
We have both the 14t excavator and 6t excavator with rock breaking capabilities. Between these two machines we can comfortably complete the vast majority of rock breaking jobs. However, if there is a job that requires any other size machine to break out your leach drains, septics, soakwells or house pads we are able to access these machines.

Stone Pitching
There are many ways in which an embankment can be stabilized; retaining, vegetation and terracing or stone pitching. The most cost effective method is stone pitching, this is where stones are placed on a bank no steeper than 45 degrees. All rocks used must be of a minimum required size and must have a minimum of three (3) points of contact with other rocks in lifts up to 1.5 m high. With most shires, any stabilization around a structure will need a detail drawing. Where you have a sand pad that has been broken out the cheapest form of stabilization is by far stone pitching utilizing the material from your site. For larger jobs the rocks may weigh in the tonnes and can only be placed by an experienced operator with an excavator (which of course we do!). On the smaller jobs we can supply rock graded to specific size so it is more manageable and the pitching can be done by hand. visit our links page to find an engineering firm to obtain a detailed drawing
