Telethon challenge 2001
On the 8th of may 1992 Peter Zilujko was a passenger on the "Pol Air 1" helicopter which crashed onto the school oval at Kelmscott Primary School. To over come his fear of flying (or even using a lift) he purchased and built a Rotorway kit helicopter from America . He then set a challenge to build, learn to fly and fly to every manned police station in Western Australia to raise funds for Princess Margaret Hospital through "Telethon". This challenge was dubbed Telethon Challenge 2001
The project was helped along by a number of local volunteers who donated countless hours of their time for the build, planning and eventually to be a ground crew for the challenge. The challenge saw Peter flying over 15000 km in just over 5 weeks, where the ground crew , led by his son Laurie, would split up and arrive at alternating towns to rev up the crowd before Peter arrived. They showcased a smoke flare safety demonstration and usually a sausage sizzle run by the local constabulary, before Peter enlightened the crowds with his speech prior to collecting the donations and heading to the next town.
The challenge was a huge success raising over $60,000.00 for telethon with every cent collected going to the cause.
